The Fundamental Monodrama Festival is back with thirteen shows from 11 countries, across three different venues over seven days between 9 and 18 June.

The shows are in English, French and German with English-language performances on 10 and 11 June.

Paradise Lost, by Ben Duke, is a one-man version of Milton’s epic poem, in a work that tackles the ardours of creating, and failing.

From paradise to hell: Angel, by  Henry Naylor, is strongly rooted in today’s world based around the (possibly true/possibly untrue) story of a female sniper, the Angel of Kobani, who was rumoured to have held ISIS in check for over a year in war-torn Syria. Soldiers were reportedly especially frightened of being killed by a women, as it would prevent them going to a different kind of paradise from Milton’s.

Angel has won the Fringe First and Holden Street Theatres Edinburgh Awards, and was nominated for the Best of Edinburgh and the Amnesty Freedom of Expression awards. The Times in London chose it as one of the UK’s Top Ten plays in 2016.

In On the Importance of Being an Arab, Amhad El Attar synthesises his own personal archive of love letters, official documents, family correspondence and more into short reviews of his everyday movements and speech. The play becomes a reflection on the basic essence of acting.

Taha, by Amer Hlehel, is the story of the celebrated Palestinian poet Taha Muhammad Ali, whose poetry describes the experience of Palestinian refugees, and whose own story parallels that of the million and a half Palestinians who remained in their homeland after 1948. The play is not about the tragedy of a poet, but the triumph of his life: a poet who for not one moment ever stopped loving.
