On Monday 14 April 2025, a flower laying ceremony took place at Place Clairefontaine in Luxembourg-Ville to mark the return of Luxembourg’s Grand Duchess Charlotte from exile.
On behalf of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, Sasha Baillie, Marshal of the Court, placed flowers at the foot of the Grand Duchess Charlotte monument. Luxembourg’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Léon Gloden, and Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies, Mars di Bartolomeo, also attended the ceremony.
Grand Duchess Charlotte left Luxembourg on 10 May 1940, following the invasion of the Grand Duchy by German troops. She was accompanied by her family and members of the government. After an exile of almost five years, which took her to France, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Canada, she returned to Luxembourg on 14 April 1945, where she was welcomed by a jubilant crowd.
