The City of Luxembourg (VdL) has announced a new edition of  Rencontres sans frontières (Meeting without borders), a sports and cultural exchange event set to take place on Sunday 15 June 2025, from 10:00 to 19:00, at the Boy Konen sports complex in Luxembourg-Cessange.

The programme includes football and beach volleyball tournaments, cycling activities at the Bike Park Boy Konen and an intercultural celebration featuring music, dance, games and entertainment for all ages.

According to the VdL, the event, organised in collaboration with the CLAE (Comité des Liaisons des Associations d’Étrangers), focuses on sports and intercultural exchange, reflecting the City’s commitment to promoting integration through sports and culture. Luxembourg City, where more than 70% of residents are of foreign origin, is home to 169 different nationalities.

For the 2025 edition of Rencontres sans frontières, the emphasis will be on inclusive sports, with an expanded range of activities designed for individuals with specific needs. Among the key additions, disciplines such as cycling, pétanque and curling will be introduced in collaboration with specialised organisations. Additionally, a graffiti workshop for young participants will be organised in partnership with local artists.

Each football tournament will be open to both men and women, with teams consisting of ten players - seven outfield players, one goalkeeper and two substitutes. To encourage cultural diversity, each team will be limited to a maximum of four players of the same nationality. This intercultural tournament “provides a unique opportunity for participants to connect with others who share a passion for the sport.” Matches will last between ten and 20 minutes, with the exact duration determined after registration closes. Teams with fewer than nine players will be supplemented with individual registrants. Several tournaments will take place across different age categories: 6–8 years, 9–11 years, 12–14 years, 15–17 years and 18+.

The beach volleyball tournament is open to men, women and young players from the age of  thirteen. Teams will consist of five players, with four on the field and one substitute. To encourage diversity, each team will be limited to a maximum of three players of the same nationality. Teams with fewer than five players will be supplemented with individual registrants.

Various cycling activities will be available from 12:00 at the Bike Park Boy Konen, including the Table-Line, Enduro-Track, North-Shore, Pumptrack and BMX-Track. Registration will take place on-site from 11:00 on the day of the event. Bicycles will be available for participants who do not bring their own, subject to availability. The minimum age requirement is ten years.

This year, the cycling workshop will also feature children’s races for those aged five and above, as well as a balance bike course for younger participants. Bicycles and balance bikes will be provided, depending on availability, noted the City of Luxembourg.

Throughout the event, a variety of activities will be available for all ages, including sports workshops, live music and dance performances by different cultural communities, and entertainment for children. Additionally, numerous food stalls will offer spectators and participants the opportunity to explore culinary specialities from various countries, creating a unique gastronomic experience,” the VdL said in the statement.

Individuals or teams wishing to participate in Rencontres sans frontières, as well as associations or cultural groups interested in hosting an activity or food stall, can register from Saturday 15 March 2025, via rsf.vdl.lu, by email (rsf@optin.lu) or by phone (tel.: 691 712 700).
