On the evening of Saturday 6 June 2026, the Optimists Cricket Club (OCC) hosted its 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner at Porta Nova in Luxembourg-Kirchberg.
The gala dinner was part of a weekend programme of events organised by the OCC, which began on Friday 5 June with a match between the Optimists Cricket Club’s first eleven and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), and was followed by a barbeque for past and present members of the club.
Saturday evening's gala dinner welcomed around 200 guests, including British ambassador Joanne Olivier and former England internationals Lord Ian Botham, Matthew Hoggard MBE and Monty Panesar as guest speakers.
The evening began with a cocktail reception and was followed by speeches from OCC Vice-Chairman Richard Neale and Tour Manager of the Marylebone Cricket Club Matthew Dixon before dinner was served to the guests.
Following the meal, a Q&A session allowed members of the audience to ask the cricket legends a variety of questions about topics including their opinions on the best bowlers in the world and the state of cricket today. Lord Botham, Matthew Hoggard and Monty Panesar spoke with honesty and humour as they reminisced about past stories and shared anecdotes from their esteemed careers.
On Sunday 7th June, the Pierre Werner Cricket Ground in Walferdange, home to the Optimists Cricket Club, hosted the MCC in a 40 over game. The match, attended by Walferdange Mayor Francoise Sauber, was followed by variety of activities including a prize raffle and offered a relaxed and fun atmosphere where attendees had the opportunity to meet with and chat to the weekend’s guests.
Speaking to Chronicle.lu, Richard Neale remarked: “It was a fantastic weekend to celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary and we look forward to further success. The club would like to thank all the sponsors and the Walferdange Commune for their tremendous support over the years.”
