On Monday 24 March 2025, Lidl announced the expansion of the “Bon Appétit, Zéro Gaspi” initiative to further tackle food waste in Luxembourg.

The supermarket chain reported it is now offering day-old bread at reduced prices alongside slightly damaged fruits and vegetables, as part of its broader goal to cut food waste by 70% by 2030 compared to 2015 levels.

This initiative, developed as part of the company’s sustainability efforts, now includes day-old bread sold at half price, in addition to slightly damaged fruits and vegetables, with unsold bread from the previous day made available in stores the following morning, the company stated.

Zoë Dejager, Sustainability Development Coordinator at Lidl Belgium and Luxembourg, highlighted: “Customers not only buy healthy fruits and vegetables at a reduced price through the ‘Bon Appétit, Zéro Gaspi’ concept, but also support our efforts to fight food waste. In addition, part of the proceeds from the sale of these bags is donated to the Banque Alimentaire [food bank] Luxembourg. Together, we are making a positive impact on both the environment and the community. Everyone benefits.”

According to Lidl, one third of all food is wasted globally, resulting not only in the loss of products and the energy required to produce them, but also in significant environmental harm. Reducing food waste is therefore one of the key priorities of Lidl’s sustainability strategy.

"Since 2020, Lidl has been tackling food waste through the ‘Bon Appétit, Zéro Gaspi’ initiative, and we have reduced our total food waste by 23% compared to 2015," said Zoë Dejager.

At all Lidl supermarkets across Luxembourg, the “Bon Appétit, Zéro Gaspi” products are now placed in a dedicated display in the fruit and vegetable section. The slightly damaged produce is available in paper bags from 10:30.

Discounted bread from the previous day is available from store opening hours in the same display area and can be identified by an orange label. The number and contents of the bags vary daily depending on the store.
