Prior to Luxembourg’s annual Autofestival, which runs from Saturday 25 January to Monday 3 February 2025, Luxembourg’s Directorate for Consumer Protection has shared advice concerning vehicle purchase, credit and leasing contracts.

The Consumer Protection Directorate has recalled the rules that govern the various contracts, in particular with regard to the right of withdrawal and the obligation that professionals provide clear and understandable information to consumers before signing any contract. The directorate notably recalled the provisions relating to the delivery period in purchase contracts. It emphasised the importance of including a right of withdrawal clause in the event of a loan being refused.

Contracts concluded remotely or off-premises benefit from a fourteen-day right of withdrawal, without having to give a reason.

However, for leasing contracts without a purchase option, customers do not have a right of withdrawal, except in the event of not being correctly informed of their rights and obligations.

For consumer credit contracts, consumers have a fourteen-day right of withdrawal which begins once the consumer has received complete and precise information.

Furthermore, the Consumer Protection Directorate emphasised that signing a purchase order commits both parties to respect the agreed terms. The directorate strongly recommended that consumers carefully read and understand the clauses of the contracts before signing in order to avoid possible complications.

Luxembourg’s Minister of Consumer Protection, Martine Hansen, stated: "Purchasing or leasing a vehicle is an important step for many households. This is why it is essential that everyone has the necessary information to protect their rights and avoid any unpleasant surprises."
