On Wednesday 23 July 2025, Luxembourg’s national railway company CFL officially inaugurated two new park-and-ride (P+R) facilities with over 600 spaces along the Luxembourg - Ettelbruck - Troisvierges - Gouvy railway line.

The new sites include a 388-space multi-level P+R at Troisvierges station and a renovated and expanded open-air car park with 237 spaces at Colmar-Berg stop. According to CFL, these additions bring the total number of parking spaces available across its railway network to nearly 9,000.

The official inauguration took place in the presence of Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, CFL Director General, Marc Wengler, CFL Director of Infrastructure Management, Marc Hoffmann, as well as project teams and other guests of honour.

“These new infrastructures reflect the government’s commitment to promoting national-level investments aimed at encouraging intermodal mobility that combines various means of transport, notably cars and trains. Our ambition is to reinforce the backbone role of rail in mobility, by supporting a complementary offer of services and infrastructure tailored to the needs of Luxembourg and the border regions,” stated Minister Backes.

“With the new P+R facilities in Rodange, Mersch, and now Troisvierges, CFL offers nearly 9,000 parking spaces close to railway stations and stops,” said Marc Wengler. “To become the mobility choice of our customers, it is essential to facilitate and promote smart combinations across the mobility chain, supported by infrastructure developed and operated to the highest quality standards.”

According to CFL, the renovated and expanded open-air car park in Colmar-Berg now offers 237 spaces across 9,000 m². The upgraded facility includes seven spaces for persons with reduced mobility (PMR), two Chargy charging points for electric vehicles, designated parking for two-wheelers, several bicycle racks and a secure bikebox located on Rue de l’Alzette.

Work initiated in 2022 at the former open-air parking site in Troisvierges has doubled the number of available spaces for commuters from northern Luxembourg and neighbouring regions. A total of 388 spaces are now available, including five for the FLEX carsharing service, six charging points for electric vehicles and nine for persons with reduced mobility.

CFL has highlighted this facility as a model for architectural integration, noting features such as dynamic signage, colour-coded levels for easier navigation, and a design intended to blend into the residential setting. “This building was designed to integrate harmoniously into its environment and residential context,” noted Marc Hoffmann. The five half-levels reduce the structure’s shadow impact on neighbouring properties. The choice of façade slats also supports neighbourhood integration.

The Troisvierges P+R facility has also been equipped with rooftop greenery and photovoltaic panels, in line with CFL’s sustainability approach for all new P+R projects. The solar installations are expected to generate up to 142 kWp of energy, feeding directly into the facility’s electrical circuit and enabling it to operate largely autonomously, CFL reported.

Renovation works also extended to the adjacent bus station, which now includes seven bus bays and newly developed rest and recreation areas for bus drivers.
