On Sunday 7 July 2024, LuxTram extended its line at the southern end to go all the way out to the Stade de Luxembourg, adding another five stops after Luxembourg-Bonnevoie.
The new stops include Scillas, Howald Gare, Lycée Vauban, Wassertuerm and Stade de Luxembourg, expanding the single line to 22 stops from Kirchberg to the Stade de Luxembourg, a total distance of 12.3 kms; the next phase, scheduled for opening in early 2025, will see the airport being connected, with an additional 3.9 kms of tracks and another two stops linking beyond Kirchberg. The first half of 2025 will also see the start of construction work on the extension along the Boulevard Konrad Adenauer in Kirchberg.
After the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony, the opening of the new section was inaugurated by Lydie Polfer, mayor of the City of Luxembourg, and Patrick Goldschmidt, alderman responsible for mobility, in addition to representatives of the municipality of Hesperange and Luxtram management. Luxembourg's Minister of Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, could not attend in person due to a recent accident limiting her mobility, sent a video message which was presented during the official speeches which took place at the Stade de Luxembourg.
Construction started in September 2022 and testing of the new tracks and stations started on 17 May 2024.
From midday on Sunday, the five new stations were served by LuxTram.
