On Friday 29 January 2016, the Rockhal and Rocklab will be holding two free workshops on scratch and hip-hop.
The hip-hop dance workshop will be held from 18:00 to 20:00 by the Balatom team, a collective of hip hop dancers who have been passionately defending the hip hop culture since 2005. They earned a name for themselves through shows, performances and contests and will be sharing their 'best' moves and tips with workshop participants. Founding member and breakdancer John has performed in local, national and international battles since 1999, and has covered all other hip hop related dance genres from locking and popping to house dance and new jack swing.
A scratch workshop will directly follow the hip-hop course from 20:00 to 22:00, revealing to participants exactly what it is that a DJ is doing behind the turntables. DJ and drummer-percussionist Larry Tmik will be on hand to help explore scratching and DJing and demonstrate the mixing and different turntable techniques applied to hip hop and bass music. Larry Tmik himself has been influenced by multiple jazz and funk artists including Miles Davis and James Brown, and after swapping his drumsticks for turntables began producing electronic mices enriched by turntablism culture.
Entry for both workshops is free, but registration for the hip hop workshop, which will take place at the Rocklab dance studio at the Rockhal, is required via this online form. Registration for the scratch workshop, taking place at the Rockhal lobby, is to be filled out on site.
