The Ville de Luxembourg today announced that buses from the IVECO/IRISBUS company have been put back into transport circulation, following several fire outbreaks of previously unknown cause which started in the buses whilst they were running.
Fourteen buses were withdrawn from circulation following three separate incidents in late July and early August 2015, whereby buses began producing smoke and bursting into flames. Nobody was injured in any of the incidents, but the buses were submitted to two analyses, the first of which suggested the fire was caused by a short-circuit in the electrical wiring. When this was ruled out, a second analysis supposed that the buses' 80A alternators could be to blame, which was today confirmed as the root cause of the fires by the Ville de Luxembourg.
The 80A alternator was produced by an external manufacturer rather than from the IVECO /IRISBUS company, and all alternators of the same type have now been replaced by new ones from the manufacturer. Following the replacement, the vehicles were declared as safe and were certified to be allowed back into circulation.
Following the incident, the Ville de Luxembourg announced that it has taken the decision to increase the number of bus checks that are made periodically, to guarantee maximum safety and prevent a repeat of the situation.
