Following ongoing modifications to the Luxembourg Highway Code, a grand-ducal regulation of 25 July 2015 concerning changes to suit the needs and requirements of road safety was today published.

The regulation A-N°153 includes the following adaptations:

Definition of Electrically-Propelled Vehicle
The definition of 'electrically propelled vehicle' has been introduced to the Highway Cide in order to promote the use of vehicles powered by alternative fuels.

In addition, specific signage has been created to inform drivers of electrically-propelled vehicles of service stations offering alternative fuels and parking spaces reserved for this particular kind of vehicle.

Adaptations of certain provisions concerning trailing vehicles

Trailing vehicles, machines and tractors carring special equipment hold a general opening of a 3 metre width, which prevents limiting their range of movement and hindering the transport of crops.

A 12t maximum weighr per axle is now permitted, provided that vehicles possessing a weight of between 10 to 12ttravel at a maximum speed of 25 km/h.

Accompanied Driving

For reasons of administrative simplification, the need for an identity card issued to a driving supervisor has been eliminated, as long as the grade or capacity of the supervisor is listed on the learning certificate.

The examiner's written report on the day of the practical driving test, describing the evolution of the candidate during the accompanied driving, has also been removed so as not to hinder the objectivity of the test. However, in order to ensure the delivery of the report to the instructor, mention of it will be made on the Certificate of Apprenticeship.

The refusal to benefit from the supervised driving with a candidate who previously failed twice has also been eliminated.

Obligatory training to receive a driving license in the AM 'Moped' category

The obtaining of a driver's license for category AM 'Moped' now involves a minimum seven hour training, to be provided by driving schools, as well as an additional learning and theory test.

Renewal of Driving Licenses for Persons Aged Over 70 and Over 80

The driving licenses of individuals aged between 70 and 80 will from now on be renewed for a period of 5 years, provided that the period of validity does not pass the age of 80.

After the age of 80, a driver will have their license renewed for a two-year period. However this regulation will not come into force until 1 September 2015.

A transitional rule is provided for those who are at least 70 and the license of whom will expire under the previous regulation. Those concerned may extend their license at no cost for a year or two years, respective to if the holder is older than 80.

Expired driving licenses

For individuals whose driving licenses expired over 6 years ago, a test must be taken in the category or categories on the license in order to renew it.
