The Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce has announced the election of Fernand Ernster as its new President.

The decision follows the nomination of outgoing President Luc Frieden as the top candidate of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) in Luxembourg's upcoming legislative elections (Sunday 8 October 2023).

Luc Frieden, who has served as President of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce since 2019 and as President of Eurochambres, the association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry, since 2022, has decided to step down in order to "preserve the political neutrality" of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, the latter said in a statement. Mr Frieden tendered his resignation during the plenary assembly of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce on Thursday 2 February 2023 - one day after CSV named him as their top candidate.

Following this resignation, the assembly unanimously elected Fernand Ernster, who had served until now as Vice-President of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, as Luc Frieden's successor. Mr Ernster will remain President of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce until the current mandate ends in April 2024.
