On Tuesday 16 June 2026, the City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg - VdL) unveiled the programme for National Day 2026, placing particular emphasis on public safety and crowd management ahead of one of the capital's busiest annual celebrations, which will take place on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 June 2026.

Held at Luxembourg City Hall, the Mayor of Luxembourg City, Lydie Polfer and Alderman for Mobility and City Events, Patrick Goldschmidt, First Alderman of the City of Luxembourg, Maurice Bauer, and Head of the Public Spaces, Festivals and Markets Department at the City of Luxembourg, Laurent Schwaller presented details of this years full programme.

In her opening remarks, Mayor Lydie Polfer underlined the importance of crowd management and visitor safety during the celebrations, noting the large numbers of people expected across the city on the National Day's Eve.

She noted that the multicultural torchlight procession, where around 2,800 participants from local associations, sports clubs, scout groups and cultural organisations from diverse communities gather, remains one of the most symbolic National Day traditions. She also encouraged visitors to remain attentive around crowded areas, follow safety instructions and stay hydrated during the festivities.

Minister Goldschmidt then presented the programme for the two-day celebrations, which combines official ceremonies with family activities, concerts and entertainment across the city.

Transport and practical Information

During the press conference Alderman Goldschmidt reminded that entry to the City Sounds festival will remain free but visitors will undergo security checks. As in previous years, glass containers, large bags, bicycles, scooters, skateboards, fireworks and other prohibited items will not be permitted inside the concert area.

To reduce congestion, the authorities encouraged visitors to use Park and Ride (P+R) facilities, while tram and bus services will operate extended timetables. Several roads in the city centre and Gare district will close during the celebrations, with traffic restrictions beginning from Monday evening and continuing throughout Tuesday’s official events.

Dedicated viewing areas and transport services will again be available for visitors with reduced mobility.

The VdL also confirmed that parking at Glacis has been progressively closed since Sunday 14 June 2026 to allow installation of the concert infrastructure and will reopen after dismantling work later in the next week.

Emergency services from the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) will deploy around one hundred personnel throughout the festivities to ensure public safety.

Speaking with Chronicle.lu, representatives of the Grand Ducal Police confirmed that this year's policing strategy and safety measures remain unchanged from last year.

Minister Goldschmidt also gave a comment, noting that VdL expects up to 30,000 visitors on Monday evening, which corresponds to the venue's maximum capacity. He added that the attendance on the following day is typically lower and depends on weather conditions.
