Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works has reported that the Chamber of Deputies (parliament) approved five bills on Wednesday 15 May 2024 concerning infrastructure projects aimed at "supporting the country's economic growth and preparing it for future challenges".
These projects are focused on the development of modern infrastructure to "generate high-quality common public goods and guarantee the well-being of citizens".
Among these projects is the strengthening of the Upper Sûre Dam, an infrastructure deemed essential to guaranteeing the country's drinking water supply and the production of renewable energy. Given its strategic importance, the ministry said it was necessary to modernise and strengthen this structure dating from the 1950s in order to meet current needs. With a budget of €98 million, the project is expected to guarantee the sustainability of resources.
Another project concerns the construction of a youth hostel and a multifunctional administrative structure in Ettelbruck, representing an investment of €63.4 million. This project forms part of a regional development policy aimed at meeting the growing demand for tourist accommodation while promoting multimodal mobility in the Northern region, noted the ministry.
In addition, the development work on Boulevards Raiffeisen and Kockelscheuer is expected to help improve soft mobility in Luxembourg City. Initiated by a 2010 law, the urban project has undergone various developments, notably the integration of the tram and additional cycle paths. Other changes cited by the ministry include the adaptation of the road layout for the new Stade de Luxembourg and the addition of bus lanes on Route d'Esch. Due to these modifications, a budgetary increase of €6.55 million was necessary, according to the ministry.
MPs also approved the redevelopment and replacement projects for the infrastructures of the Waldhof military camp (€81.5 million) and the Bleesdall shooting range (€71.5 million).
Luxembourg's Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, welcomed the approval of these projects: "It is with great satisfaction that I note the unanimous approval of these five laws. They demonstrate the government's commitment to building a prosperous future for Luxembourg. By maintaining our investments in our infrastructure at high levels, we are promoting sustainable economic growth in Luxembourg while guaranteeing our resilience, our security and the well-being of us all."
