On Friday 3 January 2025, Luxembourg's AgriMeteo meteorological service confirmed that 2024 was a record year in terms of rainfall since measurements began in 1854 in the Grand Duchy, with 42.6% more rainfall than average.
according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture, in terms of agricultural crops, this excess rain throughout the year hindered and delayed work in the fields and the sowing of crops. Even harvesting had to be done between showers, and cereal yields were generally disappointing. In fodder production, yields were excellent, however the soaked soils made drying on the ground and harvesting difficult. Corn yields were quite good with satisfactory quality, but the lack of sun and rainfall delayed the ripening and harvesting of this crop. The late corn harvest and heavy rains in October delayed and complicated the sowing of winter cereals and some plots even had to be sown again at the end of November. On a positive note, potatoes took advantage of the absence of drought to produce very good yields and good quality.
In viticulture, the late frost in April and fungal diseases caused damage and prevented winegrowers from reaching the Moselle multi-year average yield. However, the year 2024 produced very good quality grapes that will produce exciting wines.
The late frosts in April also caused limited damage to fruit crops, particularly cherry and pear trees. In spring and summer, abundant rainfall favoured the outbreak of diseases and pests, but on the other hand, market garden crops and fruit trees due to their reduced irrigation needs.
The wettest year ever recorded since 1854 (+42.6% rainfall)
AgriMeteo records show that 2024 was the wettest year since rainfall measurements began in 1854. With an average cumulative amount of 1,195.7 mm, the recorded precipitation shows a significant surplus of +357.3 mm, or +42.6% compared to the climate norm of 838.4 mm. With a total cumulative amount of 1463.5 mm of precipitation, Arsdorf stands out as the wettest station, while Remich is the station with the lowest cumulative amount with 952.7 mm.
The months of November and December are the only ones to show a rainfall deficit in 2024. The Grand Duchy experienced 140 days of rain with at least 1 mm of precipitation (increase of +14 days) and 35 days with at least 10 mm of rain (increase of +11 days) compared to normal.
2024: a year warmer than normal (average of 10.6°C)
The year 2024 ranks among the ten warmest years ever recorded in Luxembourg. The average annual temperature was 10.6°C, i.e. 0.7°C higher than the average for the reference period (1991-2020). With the exception of January, June, July and December, all months recorded temperatures above normal, with the 2024 seasons as follows.
- Winter 23/24: 7th warmest winter, average of 4.2°C (+1.6°C)
- Spring 24: 5th warmest spring, average of 10.4°C (+0.8°C)
- Summer 24: average of 17.7°C (+0.1°C)
- Autumn 24: average of 10.8°C (+0.9°C)
Thanks to precise climate records from a network of 41 automatic weather stations spread across the country's four regions, AgriMeteo has been documenting global warming in the Grand Duchy since 1838. The ten warmest years were all recorded between 2004 and 2024, and each of the last three decades has been warmer than the previous one; this has been the case since 1840.
AgriMeteo is part of the Administration of Technical Services for Agriculture (ASTA), under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture. The data come from the network of 41 automatic weather stations in all regions of Luxembourg. The values of four representative stations Asselborn (north), Clemency (south-west), Remich (Moselle) and Luxembourg City (centre) were compared with the average values of the reference period 1991−2020.
