On Sunday 5 January 2025, MeteoLux issued a weather warning for Sunday and Monday which could affect primarily the areas along the Alzette and Sûre rivers.
Later, at around 17:00 on Sunday, the High Commission for National Protection, together with MeteoLux, the Water Management Administration and the Grand-Ducal Fire and Rescue Service (CGDIS) issued a separate warning in which they confirmed that the weather risk assessment unit (CERI) met this afternoon to assess the weather situation.
The regions along the Alzette, and in particular the towns of Hesperange, Pfaffenthal, Mersch and Ettelbruck, have been placed on orange alert for flooding.
The rainfall of the last few hours and the thaw (from overnight snowfalls) have caused the water levels in the Alzette and Sûre rivers to rise, and they will continue to do so at least until this evening, and even until tomorrow (Monday) in the case of the Sûre.
At the gauges of the Alzette, the ‘orange vigilance level’ is expected to be exceeded in the afternoon or at the latest in the evening. The water levels of the Alzette tributaries (Attert, Eisch) may also rise to the ‘orange vigilance level’. At some gauges along the Alzette, water levels may also rise to the ‘red vigilance level’.
Further developments from the evening and during the night are still uncertain.
On the Sûre, the orange water level is expected to be exceeded at the Diekirch gauge from the evening onwards, and this is also possible at the Bollendorf gauge tomorrow.
CERI continues to monitor the situation.
