The Grouft tunnel was once again closed off to traffic after experiencing its second false fire alarm this month.
The tunnel has already experienced issues since it opened four months ago, after a special convoy passing through it with flashing lights accidentally triggered the fire alarm two weeks ago.
The automatic system and smoke sensor was once again triggered at around 16:30 on Thursday evening, and as this combination of laerts is classified as the highest level of tunnel safety, the tunnel systems were automatically closed and the emergency and motorway services sent out to investigate. As a precaution, the tunnel was closed in the direction of Friedhof by CITA.
The situation took around twenty minutes to be verified by the intervention teams, after which a lane of traffic was reopened in both directions. In an official statement released Thursday evening, the Administration des Ponts et Chaussées stated that it intended to conduct a detailed analysis into the source that triggered the fire alarm.
