The 5th edition of the Young Creation Triennial opened its doors at the Rotondes and at the Casino Luxembourg - Contemporary Art Forum on Friday 2 July 2021.

After a one-year delay, audiences can finally experience what the theme "Brave New World Order" inspired a generation of artists born between the early 1980s and late 1990s.

The call for participation was launched in May 2019 and the selected artists announced in November of the same year. All of them millennials, around forty in total, were invited to make proposals allowing the understanding of their generation and expressing their perception of current and future society. The pandemic has not only influenced the exhibition schedule - postponed for a year - but also the works to be unveiled on Friday 2 July.

Paradigm shifts

"Brave New World Order" as the title and theme was chosen by the curator of the exhibition, Kevin Muhlen. When selecting the artists, the director of the Casino Luxembourg - Forum d 'art contemporain said he was surprised by the proposals for exploring the subject. “Obviously, a profound paradigm shift has taken place,” he explained. “The artists did not react to the references I had in mind. This time, society as a whole has been taken by surprise by a pandemic that has shattered it, shaking in the process our way of life and our vision of our future. The title of the exhibition has gone from being in the near past to very recent news in just a few months," said Kevin Muhlen.

Consciousness and discernment in the face of the present

However, taken separately, the words Brave, New, World and Order allow for a shift towards a more optimistic reading, moving away from a dystopian view of society. And it is obviously this reading that the 43 artists (including 2 duets and a collective of 4) spontaneously adopted. "This is the portrait of a generation that welcomes its present with awareness and discernment," he concluded. It is, moreover, obvious that giving voice to artists of the same generation will not give a uniform vision of creation, art and the world. The exhibition will therefore emerge a kaleidoscope of very personal thoughts and questions.

To fully appreciate the exhibition

Since May 2020, the digital platform www.bravenewworldorder.lu allows artists to communicate and exchange ideas despite the physical distance, which is most often imposed. Fully part of the visual identity designed by Jérôme Knebusch (selected for the 2010 Triennale), this website is also accessible to the public and constitutes an excellent starting point (or arrival) for those who wish to better understand the work and the path of each artist. On the other hand, audio guides for the works A Truly Shared Love by Émilie Brout and Maxime Marion, Totem-Voyage by Axel Gouala, Back to Neverland by Bruno Oliveira and It Hurts Until It Doesn't by Julie Wagener have were produced by the fundamental school of Cessange, under the supervision of arcs audio. These guides are available for download free of charge.

A catalogue of the exhibition will also be published at the end of the summer. Throughout the summer, the Rotondes and the Casino Luxembourg will offer creative workshops for children, adolescents and adults. Some will be supervised by one of the artists and will allow participants to browse the exhibition in both places and explore the themes in an open and fun way. Two guided tours taking visitors from the Casino Luxembourg to the Rotondes are already scheduled on Thursday 15 July and 12 August 2021.
