The Centre national de l'audiovisuel (CNA) has announced that a reduced reproduction of Edward Steichen's The Family of Man exhibition will be presented from Wednesday 12 to Monday 24 August 2026 at Nihombashi Takashimaya SC in Tokyo, Japan.
According to the CNA, the exhibition marks a new chapter in the history of Edward Steichen's work and coincides with the 150th anniversary of Japanese media company Nikkei, which played a key role in introducing the exhibition to Japanese audiences during its historic tour of the country from 1955 onwards.
"The Family of Man became one of the most significant photographic exhibitions ever presented in Japan, leaving a lasting impact on photographers, curators and the wider public. Seventy years later, its return offers an opportunity to revisit Steichen's vision and reflect on the exhibition's enduring themes of shared humanity, diversity and hope," the CNA stated.
The only complete surviving version of the exhibition is permanently housed at Clervaux Castle in Luxembourg and is inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.
Alongside Edward Steichen's photographs, the exhibition will feature works by contemporary artists from Luxembourg, Bruno Oliveira, Krystyna Dul, Marc Schroeder, Birgit Ludwig, Cristina Nuñez, Anne Speltz and Nora Börding, together with contemporary artists from Japan.
