The Inspection générale de la sécurité sociale (IGSS) has published a 224-page report for 2015 on the operation of Luxembourg's Social Security system.
Considering the revenue and expenditure of all aspects related to social security in Luxembourg, the 2014 figures show a positive overall balance of €1,799.6 million (compared to €1,019.0 million in 2013).
With a ratio of revenue to GDP of 26.6% and an expense ratio to GDP of 22.9%, the overall balance of social security represents 3.7% of GDP in 2014. In total, the number of people contributing to the scheme rose in 2014, totalling 773,061 people (67% residents and 33% non-residents).
Hospital costs represent nearly half of expenditures (47.0%) for Health Care in Luxembourg. Medical fees (21.1%) and pharmaceuticals (12.0%) completed the podium of the top expenses. These three items alone account for 80.1% of all spending on health care in Luxembourg.
In 2014, a monthly average of 158,645 pensions were paid, representing an increase of 3.6% compared to 2013. The average number of insured contributors totaled 383,756 (+ 2.4%), which corresponds to 41.3 pensioners supported by 100 workers paying into the scheme.
