Statec, Luxembourg's national statistical office, has published a statistical report that shows that the population of the Grand Duchy has risen by 12.5% over the past five years.

The report was published today to mark World Population Day and the main comparison is made to the figures from the 2011 census.

In this five-year period, the foreign population has increased by 22.1% to reach nearly 47% of the total population on 1 January 2016. Over 90% of foreigners living in the Grand Duchy are Europeans, half from Portugal (34.6 %) and France (15.5%).

On 1 January 2016, the average age of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg residents is 39.2 years, with men on average 38.4 years and women 40.0 years. Luxembourgers are much older than foreign residents (41.6 years against 36.4 years). The share of young people decreases slightly over the years. While the share of people of working age is increasing slightly, the proportion of pensioners hardly varies. The increase in population is not distributed in the same way on all parts of the country. In the Luxembourg population, women outnumber men, while the reverse is true among foreigners.

On 1 January 2016, a total of 576,249 people were resident in the Grand Duchy, compared to 512,353 on 1 January 2011, an increase of 63,896, of which 15,243 are Luxemboiurg nationals and 48,653 are foreign nationals.
