The Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs has published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy in November 2024.
International protection
A total of 207 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in November 2024 (compared to 254 in October 2024 and 231 in November 2023). To date this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 1,768 applications for international protection - down from 2,266 received during the same period in 2023.
219 decisions on asylum applications were taken in November, with 57 applicants being granted refugee status (50 in October).
In November, most applicants were Syrian nationals (35), followed by Venezuelan (28), Algerian and Eritrean (21 each) nationals. So far in 2024, most applications have come from Eritrean nationals (360), followed by Syrian (242), Venezuelan (105) and Turkish (86) nationals.
Note that Luxembourg announced on 10 December 2024 (not affecting figures for November) the temporary suspension of processing asylum applications from Syrian nationals, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.
Temporary protection
A total of 72 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in November 2024 (up from 93 in October). So far this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 851 such applications.
A total of 71 decisions on temporary protection applications were taken in November, with 59 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg (84 in October); twelve were rejected.
Most applicants in November (67) were Ukrainian nationals. Ukrainians have also represented the largest group (775) among applicants for temporary protection so far this year. Moreover, there have been applications from fourteen Algerian, ten Moroccan, six Turkish, five Ivory Coast, five Indian and five Russian nationals, as well as 31 nationals of other unspecified countries during this period.
