A new petition, Petition 3426, has been launched in Luxembourg, advocating for a salary for family caregivers of severely disabled individuals.
This initiative aims to provide financial recognition for caregivers who dedicate their lives to the intense physical and emotional responsibilities of supporting their loved ones.
The petition emphasises that many caregivers face 24-hour demands, leaving them unable to pursue traditional employment. This lack of financial independence often leads to reliance on social assistance, placing additional strain on public resources. Advocates argue that recognising caregivers with a salary would promote social equity, reduce caregiver burnout and alleviate pressure on the healthcare and social support system.
Petition 3426 also highlights the long-term benefits of such a measure, including a sustainable approach to addressing the growing demand for home care as the population ages. Supporters believe this initiative will enhance the quality of life for both caregivers and those receiving care while fostering an “inclusive” and “compassionate” society.
The petition is currently open on the official platform for public petitions in Luxembourg with its deadline set for 23 January 2025. It requires 4,500 signatures to qualify for public debate in the Chamber of Deputies (Luxembourg’s parliament). So far, the petition gathered 18% of the required signatures.
