The Fondation Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg (FJSL) has announced the success of its delegation at the Mostra Nacional de Ciência 2026 organised by the Fundação da Juventude, held from 28 to 30 May in Porto, Portugal: six student projects represented Luxembourg on the international stage, showcasing the creativity and scientific excellence of the country’s young researchers.
The participants, who originally qualified through the National Jonk Fuerscher Contest, earned the following distinctions from the international jury:
- Honourable Mention: Emeline Buck, “Influence of Flexible Materials on the Aerodynamics of a Small-Scale Morphing Wing”
- Honourable Mention: Kathleen Boyere, “The Pointe of No Return: A Multidisciplinary Investigation of En Pointe Biomechanics, Proprioceptive Neuroscience, and the Economics of Dance Injury Prevention”
"This was simply an unforgettable experience" said Kishor Senthilvel, one of the Luxemburgish participants. “From meeting strangers at the airport to forming real friendships across both the Luxembourgish and international delegations, this trip gave more than I expected. Between the 20 km hikes across the ancient city, late-night UNO games with some of the international delegations, visiting university labs, and sharing this journey with so many different people from different countries, every day brought something new. I went for the contest. But I left with friends, memories and a newfound awe for how fast we all formed bonds that cross borders. Thank you to everyone who made this trip what it was.”
Beyond the competition, the students participated in a rich cultural programme, connecting with peers from Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, Brazil, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Tunisia and more. The event brought together 200 young scientists aged between 15 and 20 years, presenting 84 projects across eight major scientific fields, ranging from biology to health sciences and engineering.
Honorable mention winner Kathleen Broyere shared: “The trip was amazing, I really enjoyed making new friends, visiting the city of Porto and presenting my project to new people! The atmosphere was excellent!”
In line with its mission of global exchange, the FJSL also awarded four international students a special prize to participate in the upcoming Luxembourg International Science Expo (LISE) 2026.
