The University of Luxembourg was yesterday ranked under the top 200 universities worldwide by the Times Higher Education (THE) journal.

The journal published the World University Rankings yesterday, after they were announced during the World Academic Summit of THE in Melbourne, Australia, revealing Luxembourg ranked 193 internationally and 98th among European universities.

The Rankings, constituting the world's most widely referenced university rankings, placed Luxembourg in between Germany's Ulm University, ex aequo with the Texas A&M University and the 'Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin' in Germany.

Rankings are determined on a global sruvey of academics, taking into account teaching, research, international outlook, industry income as well as the citation frequency of publications and various statistical data. These rankings bear a substantial impact on degree recognition globally.

"It is gratifying to be recognised for the work we do here and the impact it has - both on our students and on the global community," commented President of the University of Luxembourg, Rainer Klump. "This result confirms that our young university is on the right track to become a model European research university of the 21st century."

Indeed, having only been established in 2003, the achievement is a significant one. Dr. Franck Leprévost, Vice-President Organisation & International Relations at the University of Luxembourg, stated that this latest accolade for the 12 year old university promised a positive outlook for the upcoming THE 100 Under 50 Rankings 2016 which will be published in spring of next year.

THE World University Rankings draw on 13 separate performance indicators to determine the strength of a university, these being teaching, research, citation, industry outcome and international outlook. As an international, multilingual research institute, it is hardly surprising that the University of Luxembourg's strongest pillar was 'international outlook', where it ranked 2nd after Qatar University and before the University of Hong Kong.

"The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, now in their 12th year, apply rigorous standards, using tough global benchmarks across all of a global research university's key missions," added Phil Baty, editor of the THE World University Rankings. "The results are trusted by students and their families, academics, university leaders and governments. For University of Luxembourg to make 193 in the world is an outstanding achievement to be celebrated".
