Luxembourg-based international professional women's association The NETWORK held an interactive event dedicated to "The Reality of Neurodiversity” on the evening of Wednesday 14 May 2025 at Meliá Luxembourg hotel in Luxembourg-Kirchberg.

The evening began with an introduction from Monika Ruseva, newly elected President of The NETWORK, and a somatic relaxation exercise led by Iryna Sagaidak. The panel discussion, moderated by Astrid Mayrhofer, founder of AM Consulting, advisory and HR leader, featured Joël Schmit, CEO and co-founder of AutiHD, Preeti Ramdour, Chief Architect at ING Luxembourg, and Susana Vieira, Head of Sales Luxemborg at Meliá Hotels International.

Together, the panellists shed light on the broad spectrum of neurodiversity and discussed the importance of creating inclusive and supportive environments. They shared both personal experiences and professional insights, aiming to raise awareness and dispel common myths.

A key theme throughout the event was debunking stereotypes. Attendees engaged in live interactive polls that challenged misconceptions, such as the belief that neurodivergent people lack empathy or cannot handle pressure. Discussions highlighted how such oversimplifications contribute to stigma and exclusion. A practical exercise saw attendees partner up to try to maintain eye contact - an action which some neurodivergent people may find challenging - and helped illustrate how a lack of awareness, for example in HR and recruitment processes, can lead to exclusion.

The panel highlighted the need to shift away from expecting neurodivergent individuals to conform to the "norm" toward adapting workplaces and systems to be more inclusive by design. The panellists stressed the need to rethink hiring practices. They also addressed the mental health challenges facing many neurodivergent individuals and the value of awareness, understanding and proactive support.

Insights from the hospitality sector highlighted both the challenges and opportunities of inclusion. Susana Vieira shared how different roles in the industry may align with neurodivergent strengths. She also cited initiatives such as the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme (which lux-Airport recently joined) as positive examples of broader industry engagement.

The event - attended by about 40 participants - concluded with a powerful call to action: to stay engaged and be curious to learn more, to continue to speak out and raise awareness of neurodiversity, and to strive to listen, support and understand others, regardless of our differences.

The discussions continued during the networking session. Attendees also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a sensory overload experience set up by AutiHD, a platform dedicated to supporting neurodivergent individuals, particularly in relation to autism and ADHD.
