On Tuesday 1 February 2022, the European Investment Bank (EIB) published the second part of the 2021-2022 edition of its "Climate Survey" showing that 51% of Luxembourg residents, when asked about their next car purchase, said they would choose a hybrid or electric vehicle, 16% lower than the European Union (EU) average, whilst the remaining 49% would still opt for a petrol or diesel vehicle.
The EIB Climate Survey explores citizens' views on climate change and focuses on the individual behaviours of citizens and the measures they take to combat climate change.
In neighbouring countries, Belgians were more likely to buy a hybrid or electric vehicle (63%), followed by the French (61%) and then Germans (52%).
Overall, Europeans tend to favour the purchase of hybrid vehicles (39%), followed by petrol or diesel vehicles (33%) and finally electric cars (28%).
In Luxembourg, 56% of respondents said that they took climate change into account while choosing a holiday destination, yet the majority of them (64%) still planned to fly next summer; 44% will fly to a distant destination.
In terms of recycling, only 26% of the Luxembourg residents interviewed said that they bought second-hand clothes rather than new clothes, 16% lower than the European average.
Finally, when asked about banking or investments of savings, only 34% of Luxembourg residents took climate change into account, 11% lower than the European average of 45%.
