On Tuesday evening, hundreds of people took to the streets of Luxembourg City to voice their opposition to Russian missile attacks on Ukraine and to call on the international community to declare Russia a "terrorist state".
The demonstration, organised by LUkraine asbl in response to Russian missile strikes launched across Ukraine on Monday 10 October 2022, saw participants walk from Luxembourg Railway Station (Gare de Luxembourg) to Place de la Constitution, in front of the Monument of Remembrance (Gëlle Fra). Many were dressed in red to show, according to the organisers, "how Russia is drowning in Ukrainian people's blood", and carrying Ukrainian flags, as well as LED candles and torches, "to draw [the] world's attention to [the] pain [of the Ukrainian people] and to let the world see in the darkness of their doubts that [the] light of freedom and justice shall overcome".
Speaking to Chronicle.lu, LUkraine Vice-President Inna Yaremenko noted that the turnout was high, with similar numbers to the non-profit's anti-war protests back in March and April 2022.
On behalf of LUkraine asbl, Inna shared the following statement in relation to Tuesday's protest and its aims: "On the morning of 10 October, Russia launched a massive missile attack on a number of cities in Ukraine - Kyiv, Zaporizhia, Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Lviv, Kropyvnytskyi, Kremenchuk, Sumy, Kharkiv and others. The missiles hit a number of civilian objects, children's playgrounds, schools, hospitals.
Putin shells Ukrainian peaceful cities like Hitler ordered the bombing of London, Coventry and Gdansk. Russia behaves exactly like Nazi Germany.
The West must react appropriately to the attacks on civilian objects across Ukraine by introducing an even tougher package of sanctions against Russia, as well as providing Kyiv with long-range weapons and air defence equipment.
We are now under an unprecedented threat for the first time since the end of the Second World War. Ukraine is an outpost for the defence of the civilised world and desperately needs military and political support. This is an investment of the civilised world in its continued existence.
With the participation of international investigators, Ukraine has already documented more than 34,000 war crimes committed by the Russian Federation.
Regarding all this, it's about time to declare Russia as a state of terrorism, and Putin's regime – a sponsor of terrorism!"
