Luxembourg's national railway company, the CFL, has announced the entry into service of Coradia Stream High Capacity trains on the Noertzange - Rumelange route, as of Monday 30 June 2025.
Nine months after the inaugural journey of the 2410 railcar between Luxembourg and Ettelbruck on 29 September 2024, the CFL is continuing to put its 34 new Coradia railcars into service. This deployment will gradually expand the connections made in Luxembourg and in the border regions by Coradia railcars.
Twelve CFL Coradia trains are currently in service in a three-car configuration (334 seats including 40 seats for persons with reduced mobility). Since their launch, they have covered more than 450,000 km serving CFL customers between Luxembourg and Diekirch: on the Luxembourg - Kleinbettingen - Arlon line since 10 February 2025; between Audun-le-Tiche and Esch-sur-Alzette since 14 March 2025; between Kautenbach and Wiltz since 17 June 2025; and on the Noertzange - Kayl - Tétange - Rumelange route since 30 June 2025 (first train in commercial service at 06:27 from Rumelange to Noertzange).
The CFl stressed that the acquisition of the 34 Coradia Stream High Capacity railcars represents a "historic investment" made in favour of "the mobility of tomorrow". Equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, these new trains take into account several accessibility aspects such as barrier-free access for people with reduced mobility. The CFL said this new equipment is rejuvenating its fleet and gradually replacing the older generation equipment of the 2000 series known as "Z2".
By coupling two three-car railcars (2400 series; three-car configuration), the CFL will offer twice as many seats, or nearly 700 seats in a single unit, thus making it possible to plan the new trains for even busier journeys. Preparations for the coupled railcars (2x3 cars) are underway for operation by the end of the year.
"At the same time, we are working on another important step in this historic project, namely the gradual commissioning of the twelve Coradia of the 2450 series, each equipped with six cars and 692 seats," explained Mike Strotz, Head of Equipment Acquisition, Train Service and Equipment at CFL. "This step is in addition to the CFL's commitment to offering more seats on board its latest-generation trains."
Combined with the possibility of coupling several Coradia Stream High Capacity railcars, the new CFL equipment will thus make it possible to provide railcars with up to nine cars and more than 1,000 seats.
The CFL noted that it has been continuing - in parallel and for several years - major adaptation and development work at strategic stations with the extension of platforms to a minimum length of 250 metres, thus providing the space necessary for the docking of trains of such length.
The delivery of all 34 Coradia Stream High Capacity trains - built by Alstom near Barcelona, Spain - will be staggered until the end of 2026 in order to offer 46% more seats to CFL customers.
