Luxembourg's national railway company, the CFL, has announced the permanent closure of the Milbech level crossing (PN59) and the opening of a new underpass.
As of Saturday 21 March 2026, the Milbech level crossing will be permanently closed. During the weekend of 21 to 22 March, the CFL will carry out the final works required to remove this level crossing located in the municipality of Contern (Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier line). The works include removing the barriers and lights, as well as physically closing access to the level crossing with the installation of safety barriers and concrete blocks.
At the same time, teams will finalise the new road linking Cité Ledenbierg to Rue du Chemin de Fer via the new underpass, which replaces the level crossing. From 17:00 on Monday 23 March 2026, the underpass will be open to all users, including motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. This new configuration, along with the custom-designed infrastructure, is expected to enhance both rail and road safety.
Before the 2026 summer holidays, a second underpass dedicated to pedestrians will be opened near the former level crossing. According to the CFL, it will provide easier access to nearby bus stops for residents of Cité Ledenbierg.
Currently numbering 82, level crossings on the primary rail network are subject to an ongoing removal programme. Each year, one or two are replaced by new infrastructure designed to improve safety and mobility. In 2025, two level crossings were closed in Dommeldange and Dippach-Reckange.
