On Friday 6 February 2026, the European School Luxembourg II in Mamer hosted the General Assembly of LETZMUN26 under the theme “We are all responsible for world peace”.

The session formed part of the school’s third annual Model United Nations conference, held on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 February 2026, which brought together around 186 students.

The event aimed to give students a hands-on experience of diplomacy while encouraging discussions. A total of 66 students took part from the host school, joined by approximately 120 students from six other schools. All participants were aged between fifteen and eighteen.

The first day of the conference opened with a formal ceremony attended by three dignitaries, followed by committee debates, lobbying sessions and an evening social event.

Students worked across nine committees, representing around 30 to 35 United Nations (UN) member countries, including France, Russia, the United Kingdom (UK), the United States of America (USA), China and India, with some countries appearing across multiple committees.

As part of the General Assembly on the second day, students drafted resolutions and exchanged views on global issues. During lobbying, delegations presented their proposals and gathered signatures, with the most supported resolutions moving to the stage to debate issues linked to the main theme.

Organisers of the General Assembly included two Secretary Generals, Ana-Ilinca Borcoman and Maia-Alexa Berghia, as well as two Heads of Chairs, Oriana-Mara Ciobanu and Vasileios Viannis.

Speaking to Chronicle.lu, members of the student organising team said this marked their first year running such a large event. The group began preparations in September 2025, with additional teacher support, describing LETZMUN as mainly student-run. As well as organising, they chaired committees and prepared research materials.

Maia-Alexa Berghia highlighted: “I expect to see strong debaters and very controversial and different opinions because we have a variety of different countries with vastly different opinions, representing everything from North Korea to Mexico, the USA.”

The programme continued with debates during which delegates discussed peace-building measures, including a proposal by France to create a Conflict Prevention Fund, calling on UN member states to contribute 0.01% of national GDP on a voluntary basis, alongside annual demilitarisation of 3-5%.

Delegations also discussed humanitarian response, funding mechanisms and the role of UN Peacekeepers, underlining the need for rapid assistance and international cooperation.

The debates concluded with an informal closing ceremony, including words of thanks, nominations, musical performances and a joint TikTok video recording.
