Luxembourg’s Ministry of Education, Children and Youth has announced the publication of two new educational books on eco-construction, produced by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and published by the Luxembourg Association of Engineers and Scientists (INGSCI).
The books were presented on Monday 20 January 2025 at the Lycée Josy Barthel Mamer secondary school, in the presence of the Minister of Education, Children and Youth, Claude Meisch, the Scientific Director of LIST, Lucien Hoffmann, and INGSCI representative, Thierry Flies.
The two books address the environmental impact of construction. They aim to raise awareness and inspire children and young people through scientific and educational content written and compiled by LIST experts and researchers.
According to the ministry, the composition of buildings, their impact on the environment, and how to reconcile construction and nature conservation are at the heart of the book Bauen für die Zukunft: Nachhaltiges Bauen mit Rücksicht auf den Klimawandel (Building for the Future: Sustainable Construction with Consideration for Climate Change) which is intended for students in cycle 4 of primary education. The authors are reported to present innovative ideas, imagining a world where each building and each neighbourhood is designed to protect the planet. Through concrete examples, students can discover how to design habitats that protect the environment and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.
The ministry noted that the second book Éco-construire pour un avenir durable et résilient (Eco-building for a sustainable and resilient future) is aimed at secondary school students and explores the environmental issues related to urban planning and construction, particularly in terms of CO2 emissions. It is expected to offer concrete solutions to decarbonise the sector and address climate challenges. The ministry added that readers can find information on the latest technological advances and learn how these innovations can transform cities into greener and more liveable spaces. It explained that the book also offers an inspiring perspective to encourage young people to engage in careers related to sustainability and engineering.
From February 2025, the two books will be distributed to grade 4 primary school pupils as well as secondary school students following relevant courses.
By enriching the educational offering and raising awareness among younger generations of the environmental impact of construction, the ministry, in collaboration with LIST and its partners, said it is “continuing its commitment to education that is geared towards the future”.
