Luxembourg's public schools once again reported a good pass rate (83%) in final year ("Première") exams, according to the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth.

83% of candidates, or 2,915 students, graduated at the end of the summer 2020 session, after having successfully completed their final year of secondary school in the midst of an unprecedented health crisis.

The Education Ministry attributed this session's good results to the commitment of students and their teachers throughout the confinement period and after the reopening of schools in May.

A total of 3,516 students took the various secondary school leaving exams. The success rate rose from 78% in 2019 to 83% in 2020, with the rate of adjournments standing at 12% (15% in 2019). The failure rate was 5% (7% in 2019).

Classical secondary schools performed especially well, obtaining a pass rate of 89% (84% in 2019) - slightly up from recent years. The adjournment rate was 7% (12% in 2019) whilst the failure rate was 4% (unchanged from 2019).

The pass rate in general secondary schools stood at 77% (73% in 2019) and remains in line with the fluctuations observed over the past decade. The adjournment rate stood at 17% (unchanged from 2019) whilst the failure rate was 6% (10% in 2019).

In general, female students performed better than their male counterparts, with a pass rate of 85% compared to 80%.

The number of students who obtained an “excellent” grade (average equal to or greater than 52 points - out of a total of 60) rose to 166 in 2020. 139 classical and 27 general secondary school students obtained this grade.
