The Athénée de Luxembourg has announced that it is holding an Open Day in relation to its International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (in English) on Saturday 27 February from 10:00 - 12:00 in the Salle H. Folmer at the Athenée in Luxembourg-Merl (entrance to the new building via the rue Marguerite de Brabant).
During the open day, prospective students and parents will be able to visit the school and its facilities, and talk with the teachers involved, as well as meet current IB students from all classes.
The Athénée has created a 4-year international course of study which encompasses two different levels. Following the two preparation years (10th and 11th grades) students start the actual IB Diploma Programme (12th and 13th grades). Although students may join the programme in grades 10, 11 or 12, students from the regular Luxembourgish system are advised to join the programme in grade 10.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in itself is a very demanding two-year international programme that meets the needs of highly motivated students and leads to a qualification recognized by leading universities around the world. To earn an IB diploma, students must take and pass examinations in six academic subjects and complete the core subjects CAS, TOK and the Extended Essay (EE).
In addition, students are required to take the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course that investigates the nature of knowledge in various disciplines, to participate in at least 150 hours of Creativity, Action, Service (CAS), to undertake original research, and to write an Extended Essay of 4,000 words.
The Athénée acquired the status of IB World School in February 2010: this means that it was officially authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme from September 2010 onwards.
The IB offered at the Athénée de Luxembourg is recognised as equivalent to the Luxembourgish school-leaving certificate (Diplôme de fin d'études secondaires) so that students receive an official MEN document as proof to help with university applications all over Europe.
