According to the new OECD report entitled Education at a Glance published yesterday, Luxembourg tops the league of teachers' pay taking into account information from public education systems from all 34 member countries and 13 other countries and regions.

The salaries are taken from public sector salary scales and are converted into USd for comparison purposes.

The report stresses that "teachers' salaries are one component of teachers' total compensatuion. Other benefits, such as regional allowances for teaching in remote areas, family allowances, reduced rates on public transport and tax allowances on the purchase of instructional materials, may also form part of teachers' total remuneration. There are also large differences in taxation and soaicl-benefits systems in OECD countries. Also, teachers' salaries may vary widely across countries; with the example of lower secordary school teachers with 15 years of experience and typical qualification, range from less than USD 15,000 in Estonia and Hungary, to more than USD 60,000 in Canada, Germany, The Netherlands and the US, and exceed USD 100,000 in Luxembourg.
