"We wanted a secondary education where academic development was balanced with sporting and other non-classroom activities. After seeing the progress and positive change of a family friend’s son, we decided on Merchiston. He started as a 12 year-old and in one year he went from being shy and reserved to standing up in front of a hall full of adults to give a speech on how much he enjoyed his first year of Merchiston. The logistics of being in Edinburgh (which aren’t difficult to manage) and extra cost of the education are more than compensated for by seeing the positive progress he has made in his academic studies, sporting achievements and his move into the teenage years. He doesn’t phone home unless he wants or needs something. To us, this is a sign that he is happy and well occupied." - Luxembourg Parent.

Based in 100 acres of beautiful parkland, Merchiston is a Scottish school offering the English curriculum, and has a global, outward-looking dimension. "From our research of education in Luxembourg, we are aware existing opportunities for an English-based education are rapidly reaching capacity, while the demand from families looking to move to and work in Luxembourg continues to grow. Further indication of this is that we currently have five pupils who joined Merchiston from three different schools in Luxembourg, providing their parents with an ideal UK-based education solution" stated Andrew Hunter, Headmaster.

Andrew Hunter continued "We are proud to be the highest performing Scottish A Level school which published its results in the Daily Telegraph league tables in 2014. This confirms our success of the previous two years, again achieving a 100% pass rate. The A*-B success at A Level was 81%, with 93% of our candidates gaining places at their 1st or 2nd choice of university. Furthermore, 12 of our leavers in 2014 are attending top 10 international universities."

Merchiston encourages self-reliance and independence, as well as respect and tolerance of others. The School has effective approaches to develop each boy’s personal achievement and boasts an impressive record of helping boys excel far beyond their expected results at GCSE/IGCSE and A Level.

From the youngest boarder, aged 7, to the young men in the Sixth Form, Merchiston provides a full boarding programme seven days a week and is an extremely nurturing school, a home away from home.

Merchiston has a long tradition of sporting excellence within a sport-for-all environment. There are over 20 sports and 30 co-curricular activities on offer for boys of all abilities, as well as specialist tennis and golf academies. Merchiston’s Tennis Academy is ranked number two in the UK in the LTA Tennis Schools Rankings; the Golf Academy is ranked number one in Scotland and third in the UK by the Independent Schools Golf Association.  The School is currently represented nationally and internationally in many sports, such as athletics, cricket, golf and rugby.
