The Primary and Secondary athletic teams of St George’s International School, Luxembourg, competed at the Primary Alicante Invitation Cup, hosted by King’s College, and the COBIS Games at the prestigious Olympic Centre, in Athens, Greece, respectively, last week..

The primary team had an extremely successful week in Spain, where they competed against schools from Spain, Turkey and Kazakhstan. The team participated in football, athletics and track and field events. On the first day of the games, both the boys and girls teams were placed in third position in football, with the boys’ team missing out on playing the finals only by goal difference.

On the second day of the competition St George’s and King’s College Madrid fought hard to gain the top position. Unfortunately, the St George’s team were edged into second place by the very strong athletics team from Madrid.

However, the St George’s team won gold medals in; boys’ high jump, cricket ball throw, 200m, 400m and 800m and in the girls’ 400m. Silver medals were won for boys’ 4x100m relay and high jump and in the girls’ 800m and 100m. Points were also gained in the finals with fourth place in the boys’ long jump, girls’ high jump and girls’ 400m, fifth place in girls’ 800m, sixth place in boys’ 100m and seventh places for the boys’ 400m and 800m.

This all resulted in a second place finish in the overall competition, with King’s College Madrid taking the Invitation Cup trophy.

The Secondary COBIS team’s Games started with the Athletics - sixteen teams competing over a wide range of track and field events. On the second day of the Games, the athletes took part in various swimming events and on the final day, the athletes powered and competed in the football tournament. After a tough three days of sport, Dubai College proved to be the strongest team taking first place overall.

The St George’s COBIS team demonstrated great sportsmanship skills and worked very hard competing against a number of very strong teams.

Both the Primary and Secondary athletes demonstrated all of the school’s personal learning goals, both on and off the sports field.
