On Friday 19 August 2016 at 17:00 the 676th Schueberfouer was officially inaugurated in the presence of the Mayor of Luxembourg, Lydie Polfer, along with aldermen of the Ville de Luxembourg.
The formal ceremony in an informal setting was attend by a couple of hundred people, all eager to witness the cutting of the ribbon and the parade of the half-dozen sheep – the Schueberfouer has its origins from centuries ago as a sheep fair where farmers would bring their sheep to market. Nowadays it is known as the largest funfair in the region.
Following the formal cutting of the ribbon to officially open the funfair, Mayor Polfer and the Aldermen visited a number of stands, with visitors and press in tow.
All the foodstands, restaurants, bars and attractions had been set up nicely and were ready for visitors to come – the staff lined up behind the counters also watching the opening.
As the sheep parade and Lydie Polfer walked towards the direction of the ferris wheel, the rest of the fair came to life too. People were seen queuing up for the different activities around the fair: rides, games, food and drinks – etc.
With the weather staying dry, the fair had got off to a good start – visitors excited to try the eight new attractions or to visit their favourite ones from their experiences of past Schueberfouer editions.
