Who will disrupt the disruptors is the third publication in a series entitled Journal of Financial Perspectives from EY’s Global Financial Services Institute (GFSI).
This edition of the journal continues to bridge the world of academia and the financial services industry, by bringing together the latest existing research on FinTech, a topic that is attracting high levels of interest.
In addition to the 30 leading academics on the EY’s editorial board, this issue welcomes a number of high-caliber guest editors who bring their extensive knowledge to some of the most important topics facing the industry, and compiled in several articles in this edition:
FinTech is gaining traction and young, high-income users are the early adopters
Based on a piece of EY research that surveyed over 10,000 digitally active consumers, the article looks at how FinTech has been adopted in six key markets (Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, UK and US). You can also explore what types of FinTech services consumers prefer, why they are embracing them and, when not, why they are reluctant to sign up.
Emergence of FinTech and the LASIC principles
This article offers a set of principles to guide successful FinTech businesses: low margin, asset light, scalable, innovative and compliance-easy (LASIC). The authors suggest that the LASIC principles may provide an answer to creating sustainable businesses with the social objective of improving income and wealth inequality.
Sharing ledgers for sharing economies: an exploration of mutual distributed ledgers (aka blockchain technology)
The potential of the blockchain technology in changing the landscape of our industry has been discussed extensively in the last couple of years. This article has the dual function of both providing a short primer on blockchain and also describing an experimental research project that looks into how mutual distribution ledger technology can serve financial services.
Advice goes virtual: how new digital investment services are changing the wealth management landscape
The publication explores the "robo-advisor" movement to understand the innovations it is offering and future aspirations. They are also trying to answer some of the questions many in the industry are asking: are these firms going to challenge the traditional wealth management model and change the industry landscape? Is there a large enough market for their services beyond the young, tech-savvy client segment they have attracted so far?
Olivier Maréchal, Financial Services Advisory Leader, comments: "The expression ‘FinTech’ has become the buzzword of 2015. Beyond the hype this edition of EY's journal of financial perspectives provides fascinating food for thought to all stakeholders of the financial sector. At a time when Luxembourg is actively positioning itself on the FinTech scene, this publication is definitely a good read for all decision makers in the country".
