On Thursday 25 February 2016, a professor of Mathematics at the University of Luxembourg will be holding his inaugural lecture entitled 'From a line in the plane to the Grothendieck-Teichmueller group'.
Sergei Merkulov is Professor of Mathematics at the university has a background in algebra, geometry and mathematical physics and Grothendieck-Teichmueller group in algebra and geometry represents one of his current research interests.
For the lecture, Professor Merkulov will begin with a very naive picture of a straight line drawn in a plane, demonstrating how an attempt to deform that naive picture leads us towards the mysterious object that is the Grothendieck-Teichmueller group which unifies different areas in mathematics.
The lecture will take place at 18:00 at the Kirchberg Campus of the University of Luxembourg, Room C02, 6 rue Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi, 1359 Luxembourg.
