In a second meeting with Minister of the Interior, Dan Kersch, on Tuesday 25 November 2015, the Automobile Club Luxembourg (ACL) reiterated its opposition to a planned tax on Luxembourg motorists and called for more commitment from the government regarding road accidents.
The meeting, at which the Association of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies (ACA) was also present, followed an open letter sent by the ACL to the Interior Minister in August earlier this year, in which it demanded more information concerning a suggested 3% extra tax for drivers in the Grand Duchy.
At Tuesday's meeting, the ACL reaffirmed its strong opposition to this tax, which would be used to finance the reform of emergency response services and would affect insured motorists in the country. The ACL however stated that it was in agreement of the positive consequences of establishing more professional and efficient intervention services which could provide faster and more effective support to victims of road and other accidents.
With the prevention and reduction of road traffic accidents in mind, the ACL requested support from the government for the implementation of a thorough analysis of such accidents in Luxembourg, with a view to developing preventive, training and infrastructure measures in order to reduce these figures. The ACL also pointed to the eCall, an automatic emergency alert system which goes off in the event of a car accident, which in the future will be mandatory in new vehicle models and the infrastructure of which will be ready in October 2017.
