As part of Heritage Days 2015 ('Journées du Patrimoine'), Luxembourg Minister of Culture Maggy Nagel yesterday visited the Gallo-Romain villa in Schieren, currently a site for preventive archaelogical excavation.
These scientific investigations, conducted as part of the enlargement of the B7 road, have been co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, to study a site of major scientific importance.
Archaelogists from the National Archaelogical Research Centre (CNRA) have already unearthed rare finds for Luxembourg and Northern Europe at the Gallo-Romain site, having discovered exceptional polychrome frescoes and stucco plaster decorated with remarkable subjects and artistry.
As a precautionary measure, the excavation of these Roman wall paintings is being conducted in collaboration with specialised conservators from the Centre d'Études pour la Peinture Murale Romaine (CEPMR) in Soissons, France.
In conjunction with this year's Heritage Days, the Schieren archaeological excavations will be made accessible to the public on Sunday 4 October 2015, which will be accompanied by expert explanations of sampling methods for polychrome frescoes and a Gallo-Roman objects exhibition.
