On Thursday 1 December 2022, Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, together with the Administration des Ponts et Chaussées, announced that, as part of the fight against road safety, the new average speed traps in the Stafelter, Grouft and Gousselerbierg tunnels on the A7 motorway entered their test phase from today.

These average speed traps calculate the average speed of vehicles over the entire length of the tunnel. The maximum speed allowed in the tunnels is 90 km/h. A tolerance of 3 km/h (below 100 km/h) and 3% (above 100 km/h) is deducted from the calculated value.

The average speed traps in the tunnels also adapt to reductions in the maximum authorised speed displayed by the CITA, for example in the event of the presence of a construction site or an incident in the tunnel. The corresponding maximum speeds are then applicable.

The first average speed trap in a tunnel came into force on 1 December 2021 at the Markusberg tunnel, on the A13 motorway. Since its installation, the average speed measured has dropped below the authorised 90 km/h, which reduces the risk of an accident.

Another average speed trap is operational on the N11, between Waldhof and Gonderange.

During this test phase, no taxed warning or report will follow. All photos taken and other data during testing will be deleted immediately; when the test phase concludes and the average speed cameras go operational, the date(s) will be announced.
