The opening of Boulevard Kockelscheuer in the Cloche d'Or business district took place on Monday afternoon; this will mark a significant milestone in the rezoning and redevelopment of the Cloche d'Or which is currently undergoing significant transformation as a business district.
François Bausch, Minister of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, Lydie Polfer, Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, and Sam Tanson, the first alderwoman for the mobility of the City of Luxembourg, attended the inauguration of Boulevard Kockelscheuer. The new boulevard is now open to the public; this project (Lot 1) cost €16.67 million to complete.
This opening of a new major road through the Ban de Gasperich, the sigificant construction projects will see additional traffic when operational - already the area has a reputation for trattic jams, even outside peak hours.
With PwC Luxembourg already in situ, and the Lycée Vauban and the Centre d'Intervention of the Ville de Luxembourg, optimisation of the road network is necessary; part of the Bld Raiffeisen has made way for the Boulevard Kockelscheuer, the part of which inaugurated today allows road users to go directly from the Gluck roundabout to the other end of the an de Gasperich, where Boulevard Kockelscheuer joins boulevard Raiffeisen. Access to the Lycée Vauban, which opens its doors for the school year 2017, is now feasibble.
This work is part of lot 1 of the Ban de Gasperich project. Eventually, when the new Boulevard Kockelscheuer is fully completed (as part of Lot 3), it will extend from the Gluck roundabout to the future Kockelscheuer crossing (at the current Kockelscheuer roundabout), passing through a bridge crossing the Gasperich interchange. It will be possible to reach the future Sports Service directly, the final station of LuxTram, the new football stadium and a Park & Ride with 2,000 places.
The width of Boulevard Kockelscheuer varies from 28.50 m (Gluck roundabout) to 41.50 m (bypass side). It is laid out in large part in 2 x 2 lanes, plus 2 lanes for public transport, where the tram rails will also be laid. Along this boulevard, spaces have been developed for pedestrians and cyclists. It also has left-turn lanes at the crossroads. To the south of the bypass, the width of the road is projected to 2 x 1 lane and 2 lanes for public transport (located in the middle) with a space reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.
