According to the police, the accident occurred at around 03:30 on the CR166, shortly before the entrance to Kayl. Two teenagers were walking between Schifflange and Kayl when a car travelling from the direction of Schifflange struck one of them.
The driver reportedly continued towards Kayl without stopping. The sixteen-year-old boy sustained life-threatening injuries and was immediately taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries later in the afternoon.
Police initially issued an appeal for witnesses but in a later update said a tip from a member of the public helped them identify the suspected driver. Officers found the man shortly afterwards and took him to the police station.
On the orders of the public prosecutor's office, the suspect was arrested and is due to appear before an investigating judge on Tuesday 25 August 2026.
Following the identification of the suspected driver, the police withdrew their appeal for witnesses.
The road between Schifflange and Kayl was completely closed for the duration of the emergency response.
