The number of fatal road accidents in Luxembourg increased from 25 in 2017 to 36 in 2018, according to a recent report.
On Friday 10 May 2019, Luxembourg Minister of Mobility and Public Works François Bausch, along with officers from the Luxembourg Police and Statec representatives, presented the 2018 report on road accidents. Up 44% over one year, 2018 saw 36 road-related deaths. The number of serious injuries also rose from 256 in 2017 to 273 in 2018.
The most frequent accidents involved two vehicles, trees or other fixed obstacles. Almost one-quarter of fatal accidents involved motorcyclists. Weather and season also played an important role with three times more accidents occurring in good weather. However, speed remained a dominant cause of road accidents. Even though speeding and alcohol accidents tend to decrease in the long run, their prevention should not be neglected.
Statistics also showed a link between the causes of fatal and serious accidents and the different age groups. In this regard, younger people were more likely to drive at an excessive speed, whilst drivers between the ages of 25 and 54 were more likely to be involved in alcohol-related crashes.
Regarding the types of roads where the most accidents occurred, motorways were found to be the safest routes. On the contrary, local roads made up the majority of fatal and serious road accidents. This confirms the finding of previous years.
