On Monday 6 July 2026, the Luxembourg Red Cross announced that, as of 1 July 2026, its Blood Transfusion Centre has officially become the Luxembourg Red Cross Foundation for Blood Transfusion.

According to the organisation, the change aims to establish a dedicated legal and institutional framework designed to better support the long-term development of this essential public health activity.

The Luxembourg Red Cross explained that the transition is purely structural and will have no impact on day-to-day operations. Blood collection sites remain unchanged, existing staff continue in their roles and all procedures and quality standards remain in place. The organisation also remains Luxembourg's sole body responsible for collecting and managing blood donations. As of 31 December 2025, 15,868 blood donors were registered in the Blood Transfusion Centre's database.

The organisation also stressed that there will be no disruption for partners. Existing contacts remain the same, ongoing projects will continue without modification and contractual commitments have been transferred to the new foundation under the same conditions.

The Luxembourg Red Cross further said that creating a separate foundation will strengthen and safeguard the organisation of blood transfusion services by providing a structure dedicated specifically to its public health mission.

Although legally distinct, the Luxembourg Red Cross Foundation for Blood Transfusion remains under the patronage of the Luxembourg Red Cross.

Anne Schuhmacher, Director of the Blood Transfusion Centre, commented: "This development allows us to strengthen our mission for the long term and secure the future of blood transfusion in Luxembourg. None of this would be possible without the exceptional commitment of our blood donors, whom I would like to thank sincerely. Their generosity and loyalty are essential to saving lives every day in our country."
