Gabriel Seixas has been named the first European prosecutor in Luxembourg to be part of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO).

Yesterday in Brussels, the Council of the European Union (EU) appointed the first 22 European prosecutors, including Luxembourg's Gabriel Seixas.

38-year-old Gabriel Seixas was previously Deputy Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (Cellule de renseignement financier; CRF) in Luxembourg and, as such, a member of the Luxembourg delegation to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the Committee on the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing. With a Master in law from the Nancy faculty (general private law and criminal sciences), he began his career with the law firm Arendt & Medernach and joined the Luxembourg Public Prosecutor's Office in 2011.

Commenting on these appointments to the EPPO, Justice Minister Sam Tanson stated: “As Minister of Justice of Luxembourg, the host country of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, I am delighted at the appointment of these first 22 European prosecutors. Gabriel Seixas has professional experience which gives him the qualifications and legal knowledge required to assume this high function. I wish him and his colleagues every success in their work, which will be of utmost importance”.

The EPPO, headed by Laura Codruţa Kövesi, is based in Luxembourg and should be operational at the end of 2020. Its mission is to find, prosecute and bring to justice the perpetrators of offences affecting the financial interests of the EU. 22 Member States are currently participating in this enhanced cooperation establishing the EPPO.
