Following Friday evening's Closing Screening at the 2016 Luxembourg city Film Festival, the organisers have confirmed that more than 20,000 people in total have attended this year's festival, including the screenings and other events organised.

At Friday evening's Awards cereomny, the Danish historical drama Under sandet (Land of Mine) by Martin Zandvliet won three prizes in total - the Grand Prix By Orange, the Young Jury Prize and the Audience Award. The film is set in the wake of the Second World War when the Danish authorities force thousands of German prisoners of war to defuse the millions of land mines buried on Danish beaches. the director was awarded a prize of €10,000 (Grand Prix) and €2,000 (Young Jury Award)..

Other winners included Mallory, a Czech film directed by Helena Trestíková which won the Documentary Award by BGL BNP PARIBAS, Abluka (Frenzy), a Turkish film by Emin Alper, which was awarded a prize of €5,000, and Sonita, a Luxembourgish documentary by Rokhsareh Ghaemmaghami, as well as Efterskalv (The Here After), a Swesish-British co-production directed by Magnus von Horn, which won the Critics Award.

The 20,000 milestone is expected to be exceeded over the week-end as further screenings and other events take place. while the number of people that visited the Magic Mirrors festival HQ as well as the exhibition at the Ratskeller increased, the numbers for the Young Audience Programme fell (3,800 compared to 4,500 in 2015).

The organisers have announced that three of the winning films will be screened again, giving the cinema-going public another chance to see these award-winning films:

- THE HERE AFTER on Sunday 6 March at the Cinémathèque at 17:00

- LAND OF MINE on Sunday 6 March at the Cinémathèque at 21:00.
