On Thursday 25 August 2022, Luxembourg's Ministry of Energy and Spatial Planning announced that the electricity production from photovoltaic power plants in Luxembourg reached a maximum of 40.1 GWh (giga watt-hour) in July 2022, almost double compared to 23.9 GWh in July 2021.
With 11.9 GWh electricity produced in the North of the country and 11.1 GWh in the East, these two regions lead the production of solar energy in the Grand Duchy.
Strong sunshine and the rise of photovoltaics
The reasons for this increase are twofold. On the one hand, the weather situation was exceptional with a sunshine time of 377 hours in July 2022 according to MeteoLux. On the other hand, the considerable increase in the installed power of photovoltaic panels has played an accelerating role. Thanks to the success of the subsidy programmes put in place by the government, the photovoltaic surface in Luxembourg has increased considerably in recent years: between July 2021 and July 2022, the number of installations increased from 8,653 to 9,167.
Minister of Energy and Spatial Planning, Claude Turmes, said: “Solar energy plays a central role in the energy transition in Luxembourg. It is not only clean and helps the Grand Duchy to achieve its renewable energy development objectives, but it is also produced locally and is part of the solutions to break out of dependence on Russian fossil fuels.”
